Overview

Artificial Intelligence is changing education faster than most systems can adapt. For foreign language learning (FLL), this transformation is particularly deep: AI can now generate text, audio, and feedback in real time, reshaping the teacher’s role and the learner’s experience.

The AI2ImproveFLL project addresses this shift by preparing (oncoming) language teachers and teacher educators to use AI critically, ethically, and effectively. It focuses on the responsible integration of AI tools into evidence-informed learning strategies that genuinely improve teaching and learning outcomes.

Across Europe, teachers and educators have expressed a clear need for guidance and training in human-centred, ethically responsible use of AI. Surveys and consultations conducted by the project partners revealed:

By combining teacher education, learning analytics, and AI ethics, AI2ImproveFLL provides structured, research-based support for those challenges.

Objectives

The project pursues three main goals:

Professionalisation

Strengthen the AI literacy of pre-service and in-service language teachers and their educators.

Pedagogical innovation

Use AI to enhance evidence-informed strategies such as retrieval practice, scaffolding, feedback, and explicit strategy instruction.

Sustainability

Build a replicable, multilingual professional-development model that remains in use after the project ends.

Expected Results

A blended training course

consisting of three modules and available in eight languages.

A Teach the Trainer module

enabling teacher educators to implement the course independently.

A network of 23 Testbed Schools

that trial and validate the materials.

A digital OLI Torus platform

integrating AI, pQBL methodology, video reflection, and peer exchange.

A Quality Monitoring and Analysis framework

ensuring scientific, data-driven evaluation of results.
