The AI2ImproveFLL Blended Training Course supports foreign language teachers in developing the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to use artificial intelligence in a thoughtful, pedagogically sound and ethical way.
The course focuses on one central question: how can AI help teachers enhance evidence-informed foreign language learning, while keeping human judgement, critical thinking and responsible teaching practice at the centre?
Designed for pre-service and in-service foreign language teachers, the training combines online learning with in-person activities. Participants work with AI not as a shortcut or a replacement for teaching, but as a tool that can support effective learning strategies, such as feedback, scaffolding, retrieval practice and spaced practice.
The online part of the course is delivered through the OLI Torus platform, which enables advanced learning analytics and supports the use of pure Question-Based Learning (pQBL). This approach allows participants to learn actively, receive structured feedback, and progress through the course in a way that is closely monitored and continuously improved.
Course structure
The Blended Training Course consists of three modules:
Module 1: Understanding AI and Ethics in Education
This online module introduces participants to the foundations of artificial intelligence and its role in education. Participants learn what AI is, how AI systems work in general, and how tools such as generative AI process information and produce outputs.
The module also addresses the ethical, legal and pedagogical dimensions of AI use in education. Participants explore issues such as authorship, copyright, licensing, fairness, inclusion, diversity, transparency and sustainability. A strong emphasis is placed on responsible interaction with AI tools, human oversight and critical evaluation of AI-generated content.
After completing this module, participants are able to decide when and how AI can be used in teaching practice in a way that is pedagogically meaningful and ethically appropriate.
Indicative duration: 2 hours.
Module 2: Using AI to Support Evidence-Informed Learning Strategies
This module combines online and in-person learning. It focuses on the practical use of AI in foreign language education, especially in relation to evidence-informed learning strategies.
Participants identify opportunities and limitations of AI in language teaching and learning. They analyse risks and constraints, including linguistic accuracy, cultural representation, learner autonomy and inappropriate uses of AI in language-learning contexts.
The module then moves from analysis to practice. Participants learn how AI can support feedback, scaffolding, retrieval practice and spaced practice. They design AI-supported learning activities, test them in real or simulated classroom contexts, and refine their instructional approaches based on the results.
An important part of this module is reflection. Participants critically examine their AI experiments, engage in structured peer feedback, and consider both the strengths and ethical implications of their AI-supported teaching activities.
Indicative duration: 14–19 hours, depending on the local implementation and the classroom experiment.
Module 3: Developing a Forward-Looking AI Mindset in Foreign Language Learning
The third module helps participants look beyond immediate AI tools and consider possible futures of language education. Using scenario planning, participants explore how foreign language learning may change in the AI era and how teachers can prepare for uncertain but plausible developments.
The module strengthens critical thinking, curiosity, adaptability, professional foresight and design thinking. Participants learn to anticipate opportunities and risks connected with emerging AI technologies and to translate this reflection into grounded educational scenarios.
By the end of the module, participants are able to critically evaluate possible AI-assisted futures for language education and construct original, realistic scenarios for their own teaching context.
Indicative duration: 4 hours.
Certification
Participants receive a certificate of completion only when they complete both parts of the blended learning process: the online activities and the in-person activities.
The certificate confirms that the participant has completed the AI2ImproveFLL Blended Training Course and has worked through the learning outcomes connected with understanding AI and ethics, applying AI to evidence-informed foreign language learning strategies, experimenting with AI in the classroom, and developing a forward-looking AI mindset.
